It seems so. After I entered the area and went back to link it to a friend, it was no longer in my inventory.
This particular item is for Bonta's Thicket of Yurbut. There is a achievement that says "Find the source of all the problems" The mechanical insect will allow you to pass through a door and fulfill that achievement. If you finish all the achievements in a territory then you will get a gemlin cosmetic (gemlin now known as Dot currently)
You can find these achievements in window L, Discovery
its the key to the door to the grambo area.
