I have a feeling it was changed as the old one was a longer animation depending on the targets hit... lots of people complained about long animations ruining turns so they shortened a lot of them.
Also: the old animation was prone to bugs all over.
I mean, miss it too, but honestly it was problemsville. If they ever resolve the problems it had, I guess I wouldn't mind seeing it come back for the 6 AP version of the spell.

I don't have any objections to not loosing my turns when I cast it anymore.
it seems so simple tho, they could have just sped it up.
