"Wakfu is not for kids", essay by panther

By LonelyPanther - MEMBER - July 11, 2018, 23:06:51
AnkaTracker

This summer I’ve been taking a course of public speech in order to receive credit and become better at making speeches. I was taught that speeches are a way to communicate effectively in the world we live in because they can change people’s perspective on an issue, demand, or idea. I’ve been in Wakfu for over 42 months and I realized that this game had great opportunities for players of any age but what I disagree on is that not every age player remains in it for too long, especially minors. There are many causes why minors do not last as long as over-the-age players from my perspective, but they are all theories. However I do have some facts and skepticism about the issue at hand. First I’d like to say that I love Wakfu as much as the next guy, it has provided me with lots of fun, friends, and a community that is filled with socialism; there are also some negative aspects that I would not like to see in game that are complete turn-offs and created by Ankama themselves. Wakfu is not a game for minors; that is undoubtedly a fact; some people may believe otherwise but it’s true, not all games are for minors. Why do I say this? Because there are so many things that I see that do not make sense and that should not be allowed into kid’s minds. Some of these things include facts about the in-game contents in the game that are suitable only for mature audiences (18+ yrs old), at least for Westerners. Before I get to these topics I would also like to propose a plan-to-action from Ankama: please rewrite your pre-requisites of the game into a more logical structure about the age restriction of the game, and the language configurations of in-game chats so that we (the people) of the wakfu world can play comfortably without having to worry about being banned for “rude” behavior or possibly struck a “law” that you deem necessary to fit game standards and rules of conduct.          There are so many things that make this game very fun to play. Dungeoning with friends, harvesting alone, playing as a guild, helping others, exploring the wonders of the world of 12 alongside its citizens, achieving quests, challenges, even torturing adventures that were never expected, but there are also negativity to take into account. Pking, world domination, sexuality concerns, rude or abusive behavior, verbal fighting, language barriers, cheating, hacking….I could go on and on. Recently, one of the main concerns about Wakfu is the language use upon chats by any player that knows how chat works. I noticed that there is a button in the options section that allows players to defy the language restriction of the player allowing you to “cuss” as you please. Sometimes this button does work, sometimes it doesn’t, and it depends on the channel being used and if the word is considered “rude” or “inappropriate” in the language spoken. Ankama should really look into it and double check if a certain word can be censored depending on the connotation that is being used in; however because language is ambiguous it can be very difficult to restrict certain words in the Remington server which houses dozens of countries into one server at once. A word can mean a lot of things especially in the English language, sometimes that word may refer to sexual/explicit content or it may mean something very different or innocent perhaps not something literal but used as an expression. My friend got banned indefinitely for saying “Ogrest is sperm bath” ,#Freekuro, using words in a joke-ish matter when what she really was doing was to express herself by using a simile as her way of comparison between an object/person such as Ogrest to a “sperm” bath of some sort. But that is not a reason why she should be banned indefinitely. As a matter of fact, what does it matter that this comment was the cause of any “vulgarity”. Ankama thinks this is vulgarity? Pfff please that is nothing. Ankama is too strict when it comes to language that they fail to realize that the very existence of this world is abstract, it in an imaginary world and not part of the real world. So do me a favor Ankama check yourself before you wreck yourself, for wrecking yourself is bad for your business, and that IS a fact. We players pay for your services, your wages depend on us, the players, your facilities are run with our money, which without you’d be declaring for bankruptcy and the world of wakfu would cease to exist. I understand that the rules of conduct exist to prevent chaos and keep people in check of the rules that this game abides by and that by signing them we surrender our will to oppose them, meaning we abide by your rules if we want to play your game. But what happens when someone breaks a rule or two? They get punished, like a kid, you tell them “go to your room” you ground them of their will of playing the game. That causes anger, hatred, opinions from other player sand negativity; all of which begs the question “WHY are we even playing this game if there are consequences that will make us hate Ankama?” Well, as adults we understand that action have consequences, but despite how “severe” those consequences are, Ankama should not have an option of permanent bannment. Yes some actions may be greater than other, but no action should be given a permanent punishment in which leaves the player struck with fear of what happened due to his/her actions which have a different way of being looked at by other countries. That type of punishment is done to criminals, real criminals; those who killed, assaulted, stolen, or terrorized in the real world who are meant to die or live in jail the rest of their days. I ask you this Ankama, do any of us look like real criminals? If so, do you think any of us really deserve to be banned for eternity? Think about it, real people buy from you and if they break the rules you take everything from them. All of the previous items bought, all the money into ogrines and other boosters, all of the things that make them [be them], and you take them from the players just like stealing from them as real criminal would do when you ban them for eternity. How is that different from a real criminal? My suggestion. Erase perma bans. If someone is deem for punishment do not take away the stuff that they wholeheartedly spend with their sweat and tears working in the line of work, instead store them, just like a kid would be grounded for a certain time. Take away their stuff but not forever, give them back after they’ve learned their lesson, or allow un-bannment through monetary compensation. Think about it, would you ground your kids in their room for the rest of their life?          The second issue I would like to touch upon is sexuality in the game world. I’ve heard a couple of my friend say games are for kids but not all games are, I hereby debunk this way of thinking. Games in general are for everyone, certain games do have requirements in age like in adult-only games (18+) at least for westerners. Wakfu is a pg-13 game that should be revised to fit modern sociological thinking. Yes, wakfu the series has child-like characters that are considered pg-13 at first glance. But in reality, wakfu is not pg-13 and we all know that. The latest season for wakfu shows some explicit way of showing why wakfu is not very kid friendly to say the least. It shows scenes of Oropo after engaging in sexual intercourse with echo, the eni goddess substitute. Would you say that’s kid friendly? Well many players think otherwise. In a more concerning matter, wakfu the game has some very sneaky ways of showing sexual intercourse and other related sexual content while still making it look innocent. These are some of the most obvious ways of doing so: Tofus banging in open air every 4-5 minutes for anyone to see, Gobballs doing the same but with the gobbette actually showing signs of ahegao on their faces, the pinky squishy tentacle monster in the ohwymi quest that often resembles rape scenarios in tentacle monster porn genres as well as the sramic boss that not only looks like a penis-head but also drops a very awkward boss item drop known as “orgasmik” from the words “orgasm” and “orgasmic”. As you can see these are not very “kid” friendly are they? Well for westerners, the legal age is 18 years old, but exactly when does Ankama consider kids as adults? Well according to the internet, France considers kids adults at age 15 as of march 2018, from 16 in previews years. That is bananas! For a kid to become an adult at age 15 means that they are considered to have full capacity and responsibility for their actions by then. It may be different in other countries but that is beyond my claim. What I’m getting at is that if Ankama has this type of hidden sexual content in game while calling it a “pg-13” game then they should rewrite that requisite to fit current standards for each server. Another thing, kids go to school from K-12 whether they like it or not. And for those who do go to school, they barely have time to play games as compared to adults who have not only time, but also flexibility to their schedules. It is a fact that an adult player can play more often than a minor would. Therefore it is more likely that kids who go to school to quit more often in wakfu than any other minority, which means that the players who are online are most likely adults, and as adults we are not offended by cussing and language barriers, as adults we can take the sexual jokes as just jokes and nothing else. Ankama is too strict when it comes to language, that why players are being banned and Ankama is losing money. Ankama needs to be more mature and adult-like instead of losing profit by banning players who pay to Ankama for their services.          Even if kids are playing online what does it matter? They are over the age of 13 years of age. Kids cuss, adults cuss, everyone cuss, and they don’t give a damn. Cussing is a way of using language to express yourself. No one should have the power to take away your right of expressing yourself, at least not for Western countries, who knows how easterners think but that’s on another topic. The point is, as humans, language is the one most important thing that no one should have the right to take away including Ankama. Language is the method of human communication, either spoken or written in a structured and convenient way to express yourself. If sexually connotative words appear on game chats, and if Ankama doesn’t like them it’s their fault for not having well-structured methods of approach. What does it matter is sexually related words like “sperm bath” appear on the screen?*oh look at me I’m cussing, Ankama officers please arrest me* Ankama: you’re banned for a week! or life, whichever comes last!!sleep really Ankama? Really? What kind of kid are you? who do you think you’re fooling? Who do you think you are? Disney? My advice: Unban everyone and either allow anyone to cuss with no consequence, or create a smart system to prevent cussing in game. Otherwise you’re Loooosing money!! A lot of money on honest players who just want to give their opinions on an issue, which is what the art of discussion is all about, and is a part of communication with society and the world.          The whole point of an RPG is that you are playing a role that is different from your real self. This role may be slightly different or severely different depending on the type of game being played. A player can be rude, annoying, loud, obnoxious, perverted, evil, or even malicious inside an RPG but may be kind, sincere, soft-spoken, respected, a good person, or even lovable outside of an RPG; we never know. The whole reason we play RPGs is because they allow us to become whatever we want to be regardless of who we really are in the real world. It’s a way to stress out from the struggles of everyday life, it’s a way to express ourselves as human being as live as a fiction character in this community that make up RPGs. However this applies mostly to adults because they know exactly what they’re getting into. RPGs are like jobs, and as every job there are jobs and rules to follow; like “acting the part” as if you were an actor working for Hollywood. That’s what RPGs are all about, just act the part and you’ll be following game protocol. Most minors don’t even know what a real job feels like or looks like, or have experience of it until they are grown enough to know what that feels; Often around 16+ years old at the earliest 18 years usually (at least for westerners), and most likely a bit less for anyone else. I’ve read a lot of articles about research that the human mind is not completely developed until adulthood which is why some laws apply only to adults and not kids, another reason why minors would not know the struggles of us adults, therefore they do not comprehend the ideals of an RPG along with the rules to be followed and is often the most suspected case for which kids say whatever they want whenever they feel like without the worry of being punished for bad behavior. In other cases from the adult’s perspective, an adult may cuss, be rude, or attempt to fool people into believing into something because they are adults and they can do whatever they want because they understand the responsibility of their actions because they know already that they are playing a role into the game community. It’s because adults are capable of acting the part better than adults that they can have freedom of speech or action without repercussion. Adults can act better than kids can. Remember, Ankama has rules and protocol to follow for a reason, they enforce the idea of “cause and effect”. They know that if one person cusses at someone or just out loud then there is bound to have some people around them aroused into the conversation or if it is towards a player then fights can start and thus virtual “violence” or hatred which is what Ankama tries ever so desperately to decrease or delete because it distracts or disrupts the players from enjoying the game. However, in my long 3 and a half years of playing the game I’ve seen a lot of people cussing or saying something sexually connotative that if Ankama were to have caught all those people doing it then they would have to ban the whole population of players in all servers. Here’s a fact, Wakfu player DO in a daily basis, but it is not often caught by Moderators because they are either working on something else, too distracted, wrong-time wrong-place, or may not have full access to the chat logs 24/7. But if they did have, then everyone playing the game would have been banned at least once. Which is a total turnoff for every player that causes anger, resentment, persecution, and articles like mine in Ankama’s footsteps. But what does Ankama do about it? They go by their rules as if it was a King’s Holy script to follow, and delete any negative comment in order to keep their credibility up and running. I understand they are trying their best to do as much as possible in their hands, but some things just cannot be contained.  I digress. My proposition is, make wakfu an adult-only game or increase the rating of the game to a solid R-rated or 17 yrs. That will keep away some of the troubles of minors in game as well as possible scandals and other minor details that keep coming up.I conclude by saying that what happened to Kuro was but a mere coincidence of a wrong-time wrong-place wrong-situation for her. All our friendly vise-governor wanted was a hug from our beloved moderator Owlie because she was feeling the love of what is it to play this amazing game. But what did the moderator do? He shut her up but saying that he would ban her if she kept talking. What is he? Gay? What kind of guy refuses a hug from a woman? Who knows maybe he was sexist, or maybe he had a relationship. The point is Kuro wanted a hug, then explained how she felt about Ogrest, seconds later….boom, banned. That’s childish and offensive to us players. If that was a permanent ban then Ankama would have lost money from her, lost trust in players, gotten a lot more hate messages, and probably attempt the same on a daily routine. Which one of our celebrities will be banned next for these types of behavior? Soutji, for being awesome? Elra, for being depended on? Or maybe even Rawden for being head strong and courageous? No, Ankama stop taking away our fun and let us cuss all we want. Nobody really cares about it because this is an RPG, and we are all actors in our own Hollywood film just trying to have fun while living in a world ruled by stasis and Wakfu. Even if language barriers are applied there are people who spell the words with symbols or spaces in between (i.e. O g r e s t) and that works, it does not solve anything, it does not stop people from cussing, it does no difference other than being banned constantly. Instead of putting up a barrier against language put a firewall against minors. Let’s make Wakfu great Again!

First Ankama intervention

Hello guys,

I'd have to close this thread as it is not the proper medium in appealing Kuro's sanction. She would need to contact the Support team here.

We have provided sufficient warnings to those involved, but alas there were those who still insist in doing the infraction, and even made things worse by saying insults and vulgarities, so we had to apply sanctions.

Abiding by the rules of conduct are expected from all ages. As I've mentioned in your thread appeal, you do the have the right to say whatever you want, but most people forget that you are also responsible for the reaction it will cause.

I read like 95% of this, probably lost some sentences in the text transition. I am not sure what to think about, I definitly not fully agree, but you aren't fully wrong too. But in one thing I am sure: Having the option to buy an unban with real money is a stupid idea to make players totally lose trust in the game company. Wow, that would be such a bad move in several layers.

You own something, you rule it, and if the ones who make use of that thing you own don't like the rules you set, they can just leave, Ankama is actually one of the most inactive when it comes to monitoring the game, which has led it to where it is now. Ankama should have prioritized player ban over warning especially due to all the freedom they gave us, but now it's just a rush to money over an almost dead game.

First things first; Whatever class you took in speech, get your money back.
This ramble is absolutely insulting to any hardcore debate fan.
To even consider this an "essay". Shame on you.

Sorry but I'd like to tear this apart piece by piece.

1. Wakfu is not a PG-13 game
I'd like for you to understand that you're completely correct. Wakfu is not a PG-13 game. But why is this? Is this because of game content?
NoThis is because Wakfu is not rated through the MPAA film rating system(Which I'm assuming is the rating system you were using, as your entire banter is quite uncultured to a point).
It is rated through PEGI. Scroll down on your page, and you'll see a few rectangles on your bottom right hand screen.
You should see this picture. Oh wow! But what does this stand for?? I'm sure not many of us are familiar with European game information!
Video games that show violence of a slightly more graphic nature towards fantasy characters or non-realistic violence towards human-like characters would fall in this age category. Sexual innuendo or sexual posturing can be present, while any bad language in this category must be mild. Gambling as it is normally carried out in real life in casinos or gambling halls can also be present (e.g. card games that in real life would be played for money).

So, let us break this down together. "Sexual innuendo or sexual posturing can be present, while any bad language in this category must be mild."

It might just be me, but this sounds EXACTLY what you're trying to complain about. "Tofus and Gobballs mate, but we can't say explicit words/phrases? Diddlydoo you Ankama!"

So yeah. Enough said about that nonsense.

2. Getting away from your real self
I noticed that in the beginning of your banter, you mentioned that things like PKing and World Domination were negative aspects to the game. Well I'd like you to shut your mouth right now, because PKing is no longer available, thanks to people like you.

Open world PVP was such a nice game design in my opinion, and it wasn't that big of a deal. You got PK'd, you would go to your respawn, now IMMUNE to being PK'd. You could go back to your area, and continue on. Now whatever you may have been doing, it wasn't that hard to get back to. Before the PVP update, we had PLENTY of Dragoturkeys to get around. (The number of Dragonturkeys has diminished by quite a bit, but this happened right around the removal of open world PVP.)

Now onto your complain about World Domination being a negative aspect. World Domination, is one of the things keeping this game alive still lol. Nations fight over territories, therefore fighting over bonuses and even prizes when participating in Battlegrounds.

If you would really like to argue that the game is meant for people to get away from real life and their real 'selves', then why is being a 'mean, bad player' (PKer and World Domination active) frowned upon in your rant? If people want to get away from real life and pretend to be nice, I think it should work vice versa. People should be able to get away from real life and be mean, as mean as the game will allow. Some people probably used Open World PVP and still use Battlegrounds to get rid of IRL pent up anger.

3. Wakfu Animated Series
    "The latest season for wakfu-"
Hey genius. I'm sorry, is this the forum for the Wakfu Animated Series? Oh wow, it isn't? This is for the game?

Are you really dumb enough to start on the whole "w-well the show did this-" and think I'd let you get away with it. ANYONE who compares a game to it's TV show or movie counterpart, is diluting themselves. I do not care WHAT happens in the TV show. I do not care WHAT this show is rated, and how that rating may be wrong. Last I checked, this is the Wakfu General Discussions Forum, for the game.
Next time you go claiming "i took a speech class, durr-"
At least put effort into your work. Even if the forum DID format your post differently than you wanted.

Do you understand what the edit button is?

Man, I don't know where to begin... sad

First, payment users are what keeps the game alive, yes, but having the money doesn't give the right to bypass the requested behaviour for any average user in that game, payment or not. It's like saying that because you are the customer with more bucks you don't have to wait at the line at the store or that you can park your car wherever you want to because the fine is minimal for you. And what happens when you think that money allows you to be above the law? The Anka-tank.

We all cuss from time to time, but when it reaches a really bad point, harsh measures have to be taken, like that forced filter that sometimes can reach ridiculous degrees. That's why only private channels allow certain profanities now, but public channels and certain words are always auto-censured (even with words that we didn't even know that were profanities). Of course the game is targeted to adults, it's a complex strategy game, and adults are the ones that have the cash to upkeep it, but if it is also intended to be somehow family-friendly, one can't go around saying things that you wouldn't say when there are kids around. Kids, teens, or mods, that is likely what happened. Man, I'm Spanish, I cuss all the time, if I stop doing it, I die. I need it as much as breathing or eating. But I do it when I have to do it and where I have to do it, and it's not in public. It's tough, but not so much.

About the hug part, I guess that was the big mistake that made it worse. When one of them has to be the "bad police", and request some person to control their manners in public, do you think that offering a hug in order to forget that would make it any better?! When they have to keep things in order, the first thing is usually a mild warning and requesting to cease that behaviour. They can't afford to allow unappropiate behaviour in exchange for hugs, or that might lead to guaranteed chaos for hugs everywhere. When one has to be the authority, can't afford to show weakness nor favoritisms toward them, no matter how good-willed that action could have been, they have to go around like a police agent, not like a mother that regrets having spanked a kid for bad behaviour, ranging from store guard attitude to Negan attitude. Maybe a simple "OK, I just got carried away back there" with that Ogrest comment would have been enough to settle it in a plain warning (possibly, I can't speak for the mods, but I'm sure the last thing they want is having to ban players for minor stuff like that). And hammering with the same topic again and again will likely have the same effect, it won't make it better, but likely can make it worse.

Just let it cool down for a while. Did they say " indefinitely" or "permanently"? You might see your contact back in the game someday, don't run the risk of not being around if that time comes. We can show how we miss the contact, how we regret that such a minor comment might have been the trigger, but getting carried away like Iops doesn't help. We have seen it before many times. sad Just give it time... And don't read this text wall as a scolding, because it's not.

By the way, I read the use condition of the Ecaflipus teleporter to be "Not in the moderator's prison". Is there now an in-game prison for mods to send users to? huh

I'm kinda interested on what you are trying to write about the game but your own writing and behavior of not fixing it stopped me to even try reading it...Maybe put more effort (like not lazy to fix something) next time if you want people to support you or at least hear your opinion..
