If I recall correctly, that's a graphical glitch that has to do with wisdom scrolls. The upshot is that you didn't waste any time, but unfortunately you were never level 30. You should be decently close to leveling up though, if it's the same bug.

This is brilliant. Hopefully later on larger instances (with multiple bosses, perhaps) use this design as well.
