Air is the most efficient build, capable of using every AP, MP, and WP to do damage (but only against a single target, and only if you start your turn right next to that target; if you have to move, your damage/turn goes way down). The average damage-per-AP for Air spells is actually pretty low, but since they have 2 AP and even 1 AP spells, they can wring damage out of every last AP they have.

Fire and Earth have more powerful attacks in general (Earth, in fact, starts out with one of the most powerful attacks Iops get), and those two branches also have ranged and/or AoE attacks, but if you wind up with leftover AP, then they're not as efficient, so you need AP bonuses to use them to their fullest. Fire has moves to use in a variety of situations, while Earth's are a little less versatile and a little less powerful, but have a good chance of weakening your opponent (two of the Earth attacks stun, two steal MP).

When fighting stupid enemies (for example, Gobbals, who will run up to you and stay there) at early levels (when you only have the starting amount of AP and MP), the Air branch will be devastating. When you encounter smarter enemies (i.e., ones who you have to attack at range) and have better stats, Earth and Fire will quickly catch up and surpass Air (particularly Fire, which has extremely powerful attacks overall)

To paraphrase an old analytical topic on here comparing the three branches, Air attacks are about quantity (squeezing as many attacks as you can into a turn), while Fire attacks are about quality (doing as much damage as you can with a single attack).
