Spells in Wakfu
An entirely new way to evolve
XP yes, but no levels!
DOFUS has a classic progression system. You kill monsters, win XP, advance to a higher level and with each new level, you get points to improve your spells.
In Wakfu, the experience you gain hunting monsters will push your competence in combat to higher levels. You'll be able to undertake training in a completely independant way, with over 100 levels for each spell. Your character does not have a level.
Climbing the branches
When you character is born, 5 spells are available, one per branch.
When you gain levels in a spell, your knowledge of that particular branch will expand. With the branch system, you can unblock 6 additional spells (2 per branch). After some time, you'll begin 'mastering' spells.
A progressive, global increase in difficulty
There is no limit to the number of spells you can develop. On the other hand, the more you advance along one branch, the more difficult it will be to improve in spells on other branches (it will not be impossible). Mastering all 35 spells will be the ultimate goal and will require an enormous effort.
35 spells per class!
6 branches of 7 spells
There are 6 branches of spells, four elemental branches, one for support spells, and a final branch for weapon spells. But classes only have 5 branches - three for elements , and a support and a weapon branch. Each branch is orientated in the following way:
- Fire: Deals moderate damage. Often inflicts states such as "Immolation" (damage on several turns) or "Blindness" (reduction in damage dealt by target).
- Water: Deals low damage. Often linked to healing spells and often inflicts states such as "Frozen" or "Slowdown" (loss of AP - MP) and sometimes poison. (list)
- Earth: Causes high damage. Often inflicts states such as "Stunned" (Pass turn).
- Air: Causes low damage. Costs few AP, often linked to target "attraction" and "repulsion" spells.
- Support: Boosts characteristics of allies and/or caster. Often linked to tips, bluffs and other strategies involving spells from other branches.
- Attacks with knives: Combat specialisation linked to the primary weapon of a particular class. Requires the weapon it is linked to to work.
6 masteries, 1 per branch
In order to encourage specialisations according to branches, you will master a branch once you reach level 240 in that branch. Mastery is a type of permanent bonus which will link to one of the seven spells on the mastery branch. The effects of these spells can vary greatly (more damage, bonus states, modifications to AP, etc)
You can link a mastery to a spell of level 0 to 100. To unlock spell mastery, you'll have to have two of your seven spells of level 100 and one of level 40. Then you can link your mastery to a fourth spell which will instantly make it a lot more effective.
Re-specialisation
Spells
There will be no respecialisation because the spell system is not restrictive. So perhaps Wakfu will spell the end of patches to balance out aspects of the game?
